South Korean Shares Fall Amid Middle East Tensions; Hyundai Motor Sheds 3.5%

(MT Newswires) -- South Korean shares closed lower on Wednesday, amid continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index or KOSPI was down 25.45 points, or 0.98%, to finish at 2,584.18. The Kosdaq was up by 0.22 points, or 0.03%, to 833.03.
Sentiment remained subdued due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East after Iran launched a drone and missile assault against Israel over the weekend. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for "urgent de-escalation" of hostilities in the Middle East, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
In company news, shares of Hyundai Motor (KRX:005380) closed 3.5% lower, snapping a two-day winning streak fueled by favorable exchange rates. Its affiliate, Kia Corp. (KRX:000270) lost 1.4% on Wednesday.
